Facial acupuncture works by stimulating specific points on the face and neck, promoting increased blood flow, collagen production, and lymphatic drainage. This results in a smoother, more youthful complexion, reduced puffiness and dark circles, and improved facial muscle tone. In addition to its aesthetic benefits, facial acupuncture also promotes relaxation and balance by enhancing Qi (energy) flow and increasing the production of endorphins and serotonin. These natural chemicals promote a sense of well-being and reduce stress.
Cupping has been practiced in Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 3000 years. By placing suctioned glass or silicone cups on certain areas of the body, this modality generates myofascial releases to help relieve pain. Cupping can reduce inflammation, release illness causing stagnations, promote circulation, rejuvenate tissues and improve overall wellness.
This practice uses a scraping tool, usually a simple soup spoon for the back and neck area, or a tool make of jade if being used on the face for facial rejuvenation. By gently and repeatedly rubbing the tight muscles in the neck and shoulders, the muscles and sinews that are tight due to strain, being overworked, or from injuries will send a strong inflammatory signal to the body to increase blood flow to the area. The marks that are created will only occur in tissues that are unhealthy, as healthy tissue that is adequately nourished will not be affected.
Moxabustion or more commonly referred to as “Moxa”, is a modality that uses the Artemesia plant, as known as Mugwort. This practice involves the local heating of skin and superficial tissues by igniting the dried herb and carefully hovering the herb over certain acupuncture points or areas of concern. By using Moxa we can warm up the area and increase circulation to help dispel pathogens in the body. Mugwort does give off a strong, pungent odor when burnt. Most of the time I will use a smokeless Moxa stick instead, which gives off the same therapeutic effect of heat without the odor.
Electro-Acupuncture is a modern modality of Acupuncture that uses electricity to enhance the traditional practice. Small electrodes are attached to the needles which allows for electricity to run through the needles into the body. This activation simulates what the Acupuncturist would traditionally achieve through physically manipulating the point themselves. This modality is especially helpful in musculoskeletal injuries or pain, neurological diseases, chronic pain, acute injuries and spasms.
Tuina is a form of Chinese massage therapy that may be part of your treatment. It differs from massage therapy in that Tuina is specifically targeting acupuncture points and body meridian lines. It is also considered to be a much deeper massage, where the acupuncturist is focusing on the deeper meridians in the body.
